Last week, I was in Boise, Idaho, attending Kit’s annual Craft and Commerce conference. It was my 5th time attending since they started seven years ago, and I love going because of the incredible conversations I get to have.

But one conversation from last week has been looping in my mind.

A man came up to me and confessed that he and his wife dream of homesteading, but they are terrified. He said, “Deborah, there are so many unknowns. What if we spend thousands on fencing, housing, and gardens, buy the goats… and then realize we can’t keep up? What if we hate it? What if animals die?”

It’s a story I’ve heard dozens of times. In fact, just this week, I received an email from a woman who jumped headfirst into the dream, bought all the animals, and now feels completely in over her head. She wants to schedule a consultation to help her survive the overwhelm.

Back when we used to host long-term interns on the farm to teach them the ropes, some wouldn’t even last a week. Within 48 hours, it was often obvious to us that the reality of farm life wasn’t what they actually wanted. (Oh, the stories I could tell you!)
