Milk stones in goats, white chickens, caramel coffee creamer

Hello Reader,

It's been busy on the farm this past week. Last Friday, with our son-in-law's help, we planted our tomato and pepper plants as well as some onion sets. Then on Saturday, we had our first half-day meditation retreat. I'll be working through Memorial Day weekend, both on the farm and on my computer, because on Tuesday I'm having cataract surgery. One of the things I'll be working on is getting ready for our first in-person event for Goats 365 members at the end of June.

Milk stones in goats can be easy to mistake for mastitis, but they’re actually solid masses of milk protein and minerals that block normal milk flow. This article explains what causes milk stones, how to recognize the signs, and what to do if your doe suddenly has trouble milking normally.

White chickens can be a great choice for your flock, whether you want dependable egg layers, quality meat birds, or simply beautiful birds with bright white plumage. This guide highlights 12 white chicken breeds, from productive White Leghorns to gentle White Silkies, so you can choose the best fit for your homestead goals.

If you use hay, straw, manure, or compost in your garden, hidden herbicide contamination can cause serious problems for your plants. This article explains how persistent broadleaf herbicides can survive through livestock feed, manure, and even composting, along with the warning signs to watch for and a simple bean seed test to check materials before spreading them on your soil.

Hello Reader, There’s something about stepping out of your usual environment—even for just a few hours—that can shift everything. This summer, we’re offering a series of small, half-day meditation retreats here at Antiquity Oaks Farm, just outside Cornell, Illinois. They’ll be held from 9:00 a.m. to noon on the third Saturday of each month (May through August), and the first one is coming up this Saturday. These mornings are simple by design. A chance to slow down, get out of your head a bit,...

Hello Reader, Want to go to Portugal with me and visit farms? I’m starting to map out a small-group trip (just 8–12 people) for fall 2026 or spring 2027, and it’s shaping up to be a really special blend of learning and relaxing. We’ll spend a week visiting a variety of farms—goat dairies, homesteads, vineyards, and more—while also enjoying the slower pace of life, great food, and time to just soak it all in. A friend of mine who lives in Lisbon will be helping us connect with local farmers...
