[Goat News Videos] Hormone injections, avian flu, and extended lactation

Hello Reader,

In this month's issue, I am sharing all the highlights and top takeaways from my awesome trip to the American Dairy Goat Association conference which took place in Wisconsin last month. Check out this playlist to discover interesting points on a variety of topics such as research on intersex goats, the current spread of HPAI (highly pathogenic avian influenza) into goats, the existence of polled goat breeds in Mexico and Germany, and some important considerations on extended lactation.

▶ Day 1

In this video, I present my key takeaways from the first day of the 2024 ADGA Convention. Learn why you shouldn't automatically treat short-cycling does with a hormone injection, and why abortion necropsies can be highly beneficial even if the results aren't conclusive. Plus, hear fascinating information on karyotyping for intersex goats and the potentially surprising results, as well as an abundance of useful quick takes.

▶ Day 2

Listen in as I detail all the great information I took in during day two of the ADGA Convention. This video's highlights include the reasons you shouldn't use cattle vaccines in goats, the progress the US is making toward becoming certified scrapie-free, interesting points regarding cases of avian flu presenting in goats, and why you should never co-mingle newborn kids born from CAE-positive does until one important step is taken.

▶ Day 3

Day 3 of the 2024 ADGA Convention highlighted two important topics. First was the continuing work of Dan Laney, a previous For the Love of Goats podcast guest, with his Worldwide Goat Project Nepal. This is a fantastic project that seeks to supply necessary goat care supplies and training to local herders. I also discuss another important part of his work involving children's health. Next I cover disaster prep, a pertinent topic considering the recent flooding and wildfires across the nation. Learn the steps you can take to aid you in creating your disaster plan.

▶ Days 4 and 5

Tune in to this video to see my key takeaways from days 4 and 5 of this year's ADGA Convention. I discuss the presence of completely polled goat breeds in both Mexico and Germany despite the fact that we in the US avoid breeding polled-to-polled due to the risk of hermaphroditism. Also, discover the infection that could cause your doe to repeatedly test positive for mastitis, even if she doesn't have it. Plus, I reveal two critical tips to keep in mind during your does' kiddings and after.

▶ Days 6 and 7

In this video, I present my key takeaways from the final two days of the 2024 ADGA Convention. Learn how the numbers stack up regarding milk production in extended lactation compared to does who are dried off before freshening. I also discuss the importance of taking the nutrition of your available hay into account when calculating and comparing the cost. Finally, learn one of the most common—yet overlooked—causes of respiratory problems in goats.

Happy goatherding!
