Fruit foraging, GF brownies, & is your goat pregnant?

Hello Reader,

If you don't have the space or time to grow fruit on your own property, don't worry! Sara Bir, the author of The Fruit Forager's Companion, explains how to forage for fruit in your neighborhood and beyond and says you'll likely find fruit already available in your community if you're willing to get outdoors, be patient, and pay attention. In The Fruit Forager's Companion she'll teach you how to forage and to create delicious concoctions from foraged treasures!

If you've already started breeding and are wondering whether or not your goats are pregnant, check out this video I made, which shows you how you can be fooled when you see movement in the goat's belly.

Just as there used to be lots of old wives tales about women and pregnancy, now there are lots of myths about figuring out if goats are pregnant. In this post, I discuss several of the so-called "tests" you may find floating around the Internet as well as what tests you can really depend on to tell if your goat is pregnant.

Peanut Butter Brownies

When I learned that I had a gluten sensitivity, it meant a huge shift in the way that I cooked, and I began looking for gluten free alternatives for many of my favorite recipes. These flourless peanut butter brownies are now one of my favorite treats. Even though they are gluten free, I'd still be making them even if I could magically consume gluten again tomorrow because they are healthier and tastier than many flour-filled brownies. In fact, other than the small amount of maple syrup in them, they are really not bad for you!

🏡On the homestead and in my life...

Again, my husband Mike is holding down the homestead while I spend the next 9 days in Portugal. Goats 365 members, newsletter subscribers, and I will be visiting goat farms next week, and I can’t wait to tell you about all of the things we learn. Fingers crossed that I am able to take lots of great photos and videos.

I'm also excited about another project I've been working on — a new newsletter for the serious goat geeks in my audience. If you're interested in actually reading the research that's being done on goats (or has been done) and learning why and how it relates to your management -- or why you should ignore it -- you'll love this newsletter! It will be sent out weekly and will contain just one study along with my thoughts about it. Click here if you want to be the first to know! I'm hoping to get this started in November!

Happy homesteading!

Hello Reader, You may have heard that kelp is a source of more than 60 nutrients. Some people say you can use it as your only mineral supplement for livestock, but before you do that, please read my post about what's really in kelp -- and what is not. But on the flip side, you may have also heard some really negative things about kelp. If that's the case, I still hope you'll read it because kelp is really good for livestock (and humans). I would say it's an interesting debate, but it's not...
